Forming the Past Tense of “TO BE” and all other True Twi Stative Verbs

Welcome to the fourth lesson on the Simple Past Tense in Twi! This is part of our TWI VERB TENSES series. If you’re just joining us or need a refresher, here are the previous lessons we’ve covered:

👉 Introduction to Twi Verb Tenses
👉 The Simple Present Tense in Twi
👉 The Simple Past Tense of Twi Verbs Followed By Object/Adverbial
👉 The Simple Past Tense of Twi Verbs Not Followed By Object/Adverbial

In our first lesson on the simple past tense in Twi, we looked at how to form the past tense of verbs that are directly followed by objects or adverbials.

In the second lesson, we focused on verbs that are not directly followed by objects or adverbials.

In the third lesson, we took it a step further and looked at verbs that are not directly followed by anything and end in the nasals “n” or “m”, but not vowels.

Because this lesson builds heavily on the previous ones, I start with a detailed recap to provide the necessary context. If you’ve already been through all the earlier lessons and feel confident, feel free to skip ahead using the provided timestamps.
